I gave this episode 5 stars. Arthur relies on his uncle's advice, though Agravaine is bent on destroying Arthur and Camelot. Arthur's decision to execute the rival king opened the door for his uncle and Morgana to further their evil schemes. Gwen became the next victim...Arthur ending their relationship. The turning point; Arthur meeting Queen Annis, apologizing and suggesting that he will engage in single combat with her champion. His victory and sparing the life of his opponent. I also liked the script when Queen Annis questioned him about his intentions...Arthur in turn stated that he was suing for peace. This was Arthur's finest hour. I also liked Annis' comparison of Uther to Morgana instead of Gorlois, about whom Morgana suggested herself to be.

I know this episode divided people but I do have to side with alimazimmer on this.
Carleon was not an innocent, unarmed man. He was a King who had unlawfully invaded a country against the terms of any peace treaty that Uther may or may not have made (was it ever stated this his Kingdom was involved in those S3 talks?) As such, under the laws of the time, he was to be executed - you could see Carleon himself assumed that would happen, and he was only unarmed because he had been thwarted and their weapons taken away.
Uther WOULD have done that. Why do you say not? It is established canon that Uther was a ruthless King who kept the peace at the point of the sword. Carleon hadn't DARED attack before. When he knew Arthur was on the throne he decided to take a chance and hoped he might be weaker than his father.
The whole point of the Arthurian legend was that Arthur broke the mould and became a new type of King. One that could still command respect but in a new and modern way. Uther wasn't wrong - Arthur was different.
I agree that Uther wasn't 'evil' but then, neither is Morgana. Both are doing what they believe is right - whatever they must to protect what they hold most dear. That is what Annis meant when she compared Morgana to Uther - it's their ruthlessness and stubborness that makes them so similar.
Arthur has always put on a brave front and pretended to be confident - especially in front of his father but, as he himself has stated, it's mostly an act. He's been overwhelmed by the new responsibilites thrust upon him and has taken the wrong advice and made rash decisions as a result.
It's hard to see our tv heroes acting violently but Uther & Arthur are soldiers and such things happen in war. As such Arthur's actions were not 'wrong' but they were perhaps, ill-advised.

Okay here is how it works, there will be a list of the characters of Merlin, tell me if i miss any! . you can give a person a point each charactor starts out with 20 points and everytime you go, you give a point to one charactor and take a point from another charactor. when there is only three charactors left, the game is over and those are the winners. A
Merlin-20 Arthur-20 Gauis-20 Uther-20 Gwen-20 Morgana-20 Lancelot-20 Nimeuh-20 Morgause-20 Hunith-20 Mordred-20 Freya-20 (if there are any more tell me and i will add them)

I'm sorry if was already said here (I was searching some previous pages, but I didn't found anything), but did BBC already claimed a possible Season 5, or will the fourth season be the end of Merlin?
One more thing, season 4 will bring 12 or 10 episodes?
Thanks :)

"I read somewhere that everybody is on a 5 year contract, so everything would have to be renegotiated for season 6. Getting all the pieces into place could be hard, although offering more money might help.
I would like to see a sixth season as I think the show has improved over time. They don't seem to be short of stories. There is a lot in the legends about dragons and Saxons and Mordred that hasn't been covered." I agree with you and I think I just can't get enough of this whole Merlin tv series there are alot more stories to be covered not only about the main characters but they could also try to creatively incorporate lefends about dragons and king arthur and camelot to make it alot more exciting and prolong the series itself of course untill the final destiny of merlin arthur and camelot comes close!

I have just one prediction so far for S5 [I’m sure I’ll think of others]
I expect them to keep Tristan on as one the Knights of the Round Table. His wasn’t part of the original works by Geoffrey of Monmouth but was brought in during the French writings.
Side note: If anyone is interested in researching the Arthurian legends the following links are a good starting point. I especially like the Timeless Myths site. They focus on not only Arthurian mythology but Celtic, Norse and Classical. It's a fun site if you enjoy mythology (like I have for as long as I can remember).

Last week I wrote a review about the episode Aithusa. I also mentioned how much I enjoyed watching it. I noticed the brass-like device that Julius Borden held and was able to join the 2 pieces together. I knew it looked familiar. February is African American History Month. The coiled symbol is of African origin, perhaps West or Central African. I have also seen this symbol in the African Slave burial site located in New York City USA. I came across this symbol again this week as I was preparing to discuss African Americans in the Revolutionary War. The Merlin series is so fantastic! I love watching it!

Yes, in an interview it is said that she is very important in the legend (and she is) so she'll definitely be making appearance, maybe in Season 5 or upcoming seasons.

It is weird that they have white washed every bit of Christianity from the story of Arthur. It has always been a central theme and the motivation for the chivalry and change in Camelot. Without it, the stories sometimes seem pointless. Like when Arthur was crowned and he is kneeling before??? What?

I have often wondered, given the slaughter that he brought upon Camelot in S2, is the Dragon a trusted ally? I know that Merlin can now control him - is this seen as his punishment? His actions were similar to those of Uther who was mostly portrayed unfavourably....

Did anyone else wonder why Freya didn`t show any signs of having telepathy ? Other druids have spoken to Merlin in this way. Also the other druids instantly know him as Emrys on sight. However she showed no signs of having this knowledge.
(Spoiler) On a side note- Merlin`s attitude toward the druids in the end of season four`s episode ten was out of character. You would think having the druids accepted as citizens of Camelot would mean a great deal to him. Especially considering the fact that his former sweet heart was a druid . Judging from Merlin`s reaction to seeing Freya in the season three finale, he clearly still has lingering feelings for the girl. So his lack of respect for his allies and Freya `s memory is startling.

It could be to do with the fact that she was rejected by the druids due to her condition, though the references she makes to her home didn't really suggest a druid camp.... I have to say i didn't see any disrespect from Merlin - it was more Arthurs PoV we were seeing it from so maybe there just wasn't as much screen time?

Well, the US is finally catching up a bit. 3 shows from Season 4 have aired. Too bad about Lancelot. And we all knew Uther had to go eventually. Anyhow...Season 3 DVD's were FINALLY released (why do they wait so long???) in region 1 and mine came in the mail yesterday. Anxiously, I plugged one of them into my fairly new and fancy JVC Bluray player & HDTV system. All it did was show the BBC logo and then go black with the counter looping. I tried several of the discs. Some would play, some would not. I took one of the offenders up to a 10 year old standard def. Sony player and it played fine. Have had no issues with Seasons 1 or 2 sets. Has anyone else in the US acquired Season 3 discs and had anything resembling this problem? I'm wondering if they didn't do the region conversion right or something. I don't know whether to complain or not.

I didn't see one, so I thought I'd go ahead and start a thread in which we will be revealing (and discussing) spoilers for season 4. Hopefully this thread will be continually updated as we learn more and more spoilers. Here's what I've learned so far:
-Nathaniel Parker has been cast as Arthur's uncle, Agravaine. - Morgana will return - Freya will return - Nimueh will return - Alvarr will return - Vivian will return - Elena will return - Mordred will return - More Knights of the Round Table will be introduced

I agree. It would have been nice though to have them around to meet up with Arthur again sometime though. On another note, I just saw "Lancelot" in the new series Alcatraz last night. It was so strange to see him very clean shaven and in a policeman's uniform.

There's potential for Merlin to reveal to several different people.
Arthur - IMO, I always thought since S1 there would eventually be a reveal. It was always a question of WHEN and not whether or not it will happen. Lately I've been feeling really worried about whether or not the producers are indeed going to reveal Merlin's true identity. I'm worried the producers will try to tie closely to the legends and say Dragoon is the old Merlin we know from the legends. I think if the producers do not reveal Merlins magic, fans are going to be really upset. I know I will.
Morgana - I also believed Morgana would find out atleast by the end right before a showdown. It would just make the vengeance that much more personal now that she has a nemisis who was once a friend. If she doesn't find out, I'll be mildly upset. I won't say I expect a reveal though.
Gwen - I expected Gwen to find out about Merlin by now while keeping it a secret from everyone else (and of course feeling torn about not being able to share the secret with Arthur). If she knew, it would make for some interesting plots and silly storylines and would help when/if Arthur finds out.
Some knight - I never really expected a knight to know but it would be the least 'risky' person to reveal it to out of the ones mentioned. It would also be good stand-in until Arthur finds out. It was nice when Lancelot knew but since he's dead now, it'd be nice to see someone else find out. I remember lots of people suggested Gawaine. In my opinion, it would be very easy for the producers to say that Gawaine already knew but didn't say anything.
So what does everyone think? Do you expect a reveal to Arthur? Or do you think the theme of secrets means we shouldn't expect a reveal? Would you be fine without a reveal or be upset ?
