He couldn’t believe it. He couldn’t believe that Guinevere was crying for Lancelot. She belonged with him, and only him. He didn’t care that nothing could happen between them, he loved her.
“I love her…” Arthur said to himself. He couldn’t believe what he had just said, but it was true he knew he had feelings for, but never thought of the word love to describe his feelings for her. “I love her.” He said, smiling slightly at the idea. Then he remembered that nothing could happen between him and groaned. “That just makes it worse.” He said.
There was a knock at his door. “Come in.”
It was Gwen.
“Gwen, what are you doing here?” He said surprised that she was there.
“I just wanted to say…Thank you. For saving me. And Morgana thanks you deeply also, that’s why she had me bring you these flowers.” She said, holding up a vase.
“Oh, just set them over there I guess.” He said pointing towards the bedside table.
“It was very brave of you.” She said, setting the flowers down.
“Yeah, I guess so.”
“No really, it was.”
“Yeah, Well Lancelot did a lot of it.”
“Well, I guess he did help. But we never would have gotten out if it wasn’t for you and Merlin.”
“Yeah, I guess.”
“Why are you not boasting? The Arthur I know would be talking about it all the time!”
“Well Maybe I’ve changed!’ He said standing up abruptly.
“People do not change that fast!” She said, taking a step back.
“Well maybe I have!” He walked towards the window and looked out at the kingdom and saw Merlin struggling with his horse.
“Arthur, what’s going on?”
“Nothing!” He said facing her.
“It’s Lancelot, isn’t it?”
“What?”
“I saw your face when he took my hand in the tunnel.” She paused waiting for his reaction. He looked down at his feet.
“Arthur,” she said walking towards him, “you said your father would never understand, that you didn’t have feelings for me.”
“I did say my father would never understand,” He said still looking at his feet, “But I never said I didn’t” He paused and looked up at her, tears in his eyes, “love you.” He finished and walked out of the room, leaving Gwen standing there stunned and feeling like a fool.
Arthur met Merlin outside the door but just swept by him, leaving him confused. Then Gwen walked out, doing the same.
“What just-I don’t wanna know.” Merlin said and followed Arthur.
