EPISODE SYNOPSIS

Merlin is saved from a terrifying winged beast by a heroic stranger - a young man named Lancelot, who dreams of becoming a Knight of Camelot. In order to thank him, Merlin provides falsified records of Lancelot's noble birth and Lancelot is accepted. However, with the winged beast discovered to be a gryphon, still on the loose, Merlin's decision could have far-reaching consequences not just for Lancelot, but for Camelot.

	Backstory: He is a commoner who wants to become a knight, because he saw his parents being murdered.

	Name:Geoffrey of Monmouth

	Backstory:He is the court genealogist who the king calls on for help, and is an old friend of Gauis.

MAGIC & SPELLS IN THIS MERLIN EPISODE

MAGIC USER?	WHAT MAGIC / SPELLS DID THEY USE?	WHY?
Merlin	He used a spell that could magically strengthen any mortal weapons.	To kill the gryphon that is terrorizing the people of Camelot.
Merlin	Used a spell that allowed him to copy a page out of a book.	So Lancelot could become a Knight by faking credentials.

REVELATIONS

Lancelot learns of Merlin's magic, but promises never to tell.
Camelot's laws dictate that only one of noble blood can become a knight. This law is known as the "First Code of Camelot."
We get a brief look at Gwen and Lancelot's affections for each other.

UNANSWERED QUESTIONS

MERLIN EPISODE TRIVIA

Goof: When Lancelot goes to the rescue of Arthur, he throws down his lance before dismounting his horse but on the next shot, the lance is no longer on the ground. Similarly, in the following scene, after hitting the gryphon, he turns back and the lance is no longer in his hand and it can't be seen on the path in front of him.

John Hurt is credited although The Great Dragon does not appear in this episode.
Santiago Cabrera and Bradley James both graduated from the same drama school in London, though Cabrera graduated four years before.
No stunt doubles were used during Arthur and Lancelot's broom fight.
This is writer Julian Jones' favorite episode from season 1.
