Increasingly the Lady Guinevere heard only joy and relief throughout Camelot as she moved among the people who would often praise her influence over their recently crowned king.

"Finally the head of our kingdom is connected to a beating heart."
"None will die to protect this King's pride!"
"Thank you Lady Guinevere."
"Bless you both m'Lady!"
Gwen herself had once marvelled at the wondrous changes in Arthur since the arrival of Merlin, and considered her own influence to be merely the custard to Merlin's Arthur trifle. Years ago she learned that the young Prince had yearned to rebel against his father's injustices. Therein lied the most important difference between the two kings of Camelot: Uther consistently punished those who challenged him, where the people who stood up to Arthur became those he cherished most.
"Are you ready?" Merlin asked, holding out his arm as she turned from the window.
Since the death of her father at the command of the late king there was no one Gwen trusted more than Merlin - least of all herself. He smiled his usual friendly smile that involuntarily lifted the spirits of those it was bestowed upon. Arthur said Gwen's smile had the same effect, but "with a lot more intelligence and a lot less goofy prat!" Arthur's friendship and love may be hard won, but every battle was worth it.
"Ready as I'll ever be I suppose."
Gwen gratefully accepted Merlin's stabilizing arm, nervously adjusting the skirt of her wedding gown with her free hand. He kissed her cheek affectionately and led her through the doors of the crowded citadel.

Gwen stopped self-consciously as the noble guests turned to appraise this daughter of a blacksmith who presumed to marry a King. The altar,oh my, this is really happening. Arthur! His expression made her swoon slightly yet carried her forward, drawing her to him; they were alone in the room. As always happened when he saw her, or merely thought of her, Arthur's eyes became radiant, revealing all the love and potential held captive in his youth. He rocked back a little to absorb the impact of her loveliness, eyes widening appreciatively. Those soft lips that had so secretly, so earnestly kissed hers formed a smile to eclipse the sun before boldly shaping the words "I love you" as those glorious eyes proclaimed to all that this woman brought meaning to his existence.

Who could resist such a love: the love of a man who endeavoured through every waking moment to be man of heart and sense, love and duty?

Arthur often told her it was easy to be the King Camelot needed with her by his side, joking that even Merlin could rise to greatness if he could but have a love like Gwen to sustain him. He tried so hard to be the man Gwen needed and admired most. He tried so hard to be....Lancelot! As though conjured by the thought of his name she saw him standing in attendance as Arthur's Knight Errant and stopped moving; not a breath.

Merlin stumbled slightly and Arthur's eyes narrowed in concern for his bride before slowly, reluctantly turning to Lancelot. Lancelot's countenance proved the lie behind his gallant words and valiant deeds of the past year: he had never truly given her up. Arthur understood now that Lancelot had in part befriended him to advance at court and ultimately win the woman they both loved. The King's expression became scowling and snide; the one Gwen considered his "pre-Merlin" face.

Time seemed to stop.

"Time to choose your destiny." Merlin whispered, and she felt in his words an underlying power, a knowledge beyond her own understanding.

Gwen forced herself to remember times she'd shared with Arthur, not momentous life-and-death events, but ordinary conversations and gestures that sustained their relationship. She did love him. Realising this, she could breathe again. Her frozen smile thawed, becoming warm and slightly apologetic as she took the next step. Merlin characteristically stumbled to regain their previously dignified rhythm and she couldn't withhold the tiny, most unqueenly snort of laughter. Arthur turned at the familiar sound to see Merlin trip in her dress. The King rolled his eyes with the mandatory "tcht" and shake of the head reserved for the ineptitude of their closest friend, causing her rich laugh to cascade fully down the aisle. Smiling at her intimate knowledge of this gesture he caught her eyes; those brown eyes which could emanate love while demanding justice. The slightest smile or frown in those eyes governed his every decision. Arthur repeatedly confessed that her eyes ruled Camelot, he simply carried out their orders. His own eyes were again blazing as they revealed the honest affection for his bride, pleading for approval and above all, her love.

Gwen's destiny was thus set. Merlin had been forbidden to express any warning. He could not prevent the tragedy awaiting the only people he loved more than magic. He understood Gwen's decision, but could never forgive her.

With a Queen so beloved by his side Arthur would become a generous, merciful King, a man of integrity. If his deep self-effacing love were thwarted...Arthur had the potential to be a vessel more twisted by revenge than the father he both feared and venerated.

For the love of Camelot, Gwen chose to be happy with Arthur.

For the love of Camelot, she would marry the wrong man.
