MERLIN'S STORY

Merlin came to Camelot after living in the town of Ealdor. It is implied that he had to leave Ealdor because his mother, Hunith had feared that the villagers will find out about his magical ability. Hunith had requested an old friend of the family, Gaius, the court physician of Camelot to take Merlin in as an apprentice to guide him. Gaius, in his early days, had also practised magic but had given up the old ways when King Uther Pendragon took reign as King of Camelot some twenty years earlier and barred the practise of any form of magic from the Kingdom.

Through Merlin's journey he has come to gain the friendship of Uther's son, Arthur Pendragon and found kinship with Guinevere and Morgana.

Unable to practise magic openly, Merlin finds himself in numerous odd and difficult situations wherein he has to fulfil his destiny in protecting Arthur in the quest to ensure that Arthur becomes the next reigning king of Camelot to enable the practise of magic to once again be allowed in Camelot.

MERLIN'S RELATIONSHIPS

	Name: Arthur
	Occupation: Prince of Camelot
	Relationship: Merlin is Arthur's servant but they come to respect each other as friends. In Season 2 Merlin shows insecurities concerning Arthur's opinion of Arthur and he wishes that Arthur could see him as he is. Merlin continues to help Arthur in any way that he can and it is clear that there is a bond of trust between them.

	Name: Gaius
	Occupation: Court Physician
	Relationship: Gaius is a mentor and friend to Merlin and fulfils a fatherly role. Despite this, there is often tension between them, Merlin often disobeys Gaius' orders to stay out of things. However, Gaius has shown that he would be willing to die for Merlin.

	Name: Gwen
	Occupation: Morgana's maid
	Relationship: Merlin and Gwen become good friends almost immediately after meeting. There was a possibility of a romantic relationship in the first season but now they have become strictly platonic friends.

	Name: Morgana
	Occupation: King's ward
	Relationship: She and Merlin become friends and comrades in the struggle against Uther's inflexible attitude to magic. There is also the possibility for a romantic relationship. As the last time Morgana saw Merlin he tried to poison her, it is likely that she might hold a grudge.

	Name: Uther Pendragon
	Occupation: King of Camelot
	Relationship: He has a low opinion of Merlin due to his status as a servant and Merlin also thinks little of Uther's attitude towards magic. Uther however does occasionally recognise Merlin's loyalty to Arthur.

	Name: The Great Dragon
	Occupation: Prisoner of Uther
	Relationship: At first it seems as though he is guiding Merlin towards his destiny, but as it turns out, he was merely manipulating him for his own reasons. Merlin swears he will never see him again however in Season 2 Merlin agrees to eventually set him free in return for helping him save Camelot. Merlin does eventually set him free and then only manages to stop him from destroying Camelot by becoming a Dragon Lord.

MERLIN'S BEST QUOTES

"That's disgusting. You should be ashamed of yourself, you're old enough to be her grandfather!" (about Gwen and Gaius hugging when they thought he was dead)

That....I am only one side of a coin. The brighter side obviously! (to Gaius)
(When the plate he blocked a arrow from killing Gaius rolls to Arthur's feet) "Honestly, Merlin, you're so clumsy, is it natural or do you practice in front of a mirror every night?" Merlin:"it's just one of my many gifts!"
Merlin to Gaius: Do you think I sit around doing nothing?! I haven't had the chance to sit around doing nothing since the day I arrived in Camelot, I've been too busy running around after Arthur; do this Merlin, do that Merlin and when I'm not running around after Arthur I'm doing chores for you and when I'm not doing ......that I'm fulfilling my destiny! Do you know how many times I've saved Arthur's life? I've lost count! Do I get any thanks? NO! I have fought griffins, witches, bandits, I have been punched, poisoned, pelted with fruit and all the while I have to hide who I really am because if anyone finds out Uther will have me executed, and sometimes I feel as though I'm being pulled in so many directions I don't know which way to turn!!
Arhur: If you ever repeat this to anyone, I will make your life a living hell Merlin: More than you already do?
Merlin: We could talk about your feelings on the way (to arthur)
Merlin to Gauis: Alright Gauis, I promise never to save your life again
Merlin to Gauis; Arthur's thanking me Uther's grateful your proud, I've never been this proud.
Merlin to Arthur: I am talking rubbish as usual, I mean I am talking.
Merlin to Nimueh: I willingly give my life for Arthurs.
