I agree with a lot of it: I want Arthur to find out about Merlin's magic and for him to respect Merlin more, but the main thing I want them to hurry up with is that each time Merlin warns Arthur of something, Arthur ignores him, and every time he is right. Hasn't Arthur learnt to trust the word of his servant, by now? If he doesn't respect enough to treat him like a true friend (much like Uther and Guias) then, to let the comedy remain, couldn't he at least trust him more and stop dismissing Merlin's hints and adivce?
I want Arthur to find out about Merlin's magic, but I've a feeling Arthur must either trust magic more first and it's Merlin eventually daring to tell Arthur or he'll find out, banish Merlin and then Merlin proves himself. As much as I'd love it to be easier, or just plain easy, I doubt the writers will do that. It might take a while, but I'm waiting for the famous wizard, not the undercover warlock.
behindthemagic, I don't think tension would be lost, I think it could make it even better. It would be a challenging growth as Arthur would have to decide whether to trust Merlin, whether to tell Uther, whether to keep him, etc. It would greatly intensify if the secret was in Arthur's hands as well as Guias because so much would be at stake. It was a massive character growth for Arthur because he has a profound trust in Merlin (that he doesn't like to admit), so that would force him to adapt to everything. There could also be questions like, "if you knew Morgana was evil, why didn't you say anything?" and things like that which Merlin has excellent reasons for (his life, lol) but Arthur could challenge an awful lot. The amnesia would be a funny twist, though. If at one point he accecpts it, but still seems like he could be skeptical, then loses the memory, Merlin would torn between risking it again or keeping safely secret.
