| CHARACTER & PLOT CONNECTIONS: Lancelot desperately wants to be a knight but he is not a noble. By the end of the episode, he has shown Arthur that he is worthy. However, Lancelot doesn't feel that he has earned it, so he leaves to start again, somewhere far from Camelot. He hopes that someday, he will be able to prove, not only to others, but himself that he is a worthy knight of Camelot.

You have to go, Merlin. You belong at Arthur's side." | CHARACTER & PLOT CONNECTIONS: Hunith is Merlin's mother. She sent Merlin to Camelot so that Gaius can teach Merlin to control his magic. In The Moment of Truth, Hunith's village (Ealdor) is threatened, and Hunith visits Camelot to beg Uther for help. Uther refuses, however, Merlin, Morgana, Gwen and an initially reluctant Arthur, accompany her back and help to defend Ealdor. In Le Morte d'Arthur, Hunith falls ill due to a deal made by Merlin and Nimueh. Merlin had offered his own life for Arthur's; instead it is Hunith who suffers. Gaius gives his life for Hunith's, so it is assumed she is well again by the end of the episode.

Merlin cures him, but his actions cause Gwen to be seized as a sorceress. Tom does not appear in 'Excalibur', but he is credited with making the sword Gwen gives Merlin - the sword that becomes the fabled Excalibur. In the hope of gaining more money to buy luxuries for himself and Gwen, Tom strucks a bargain to help Tauran transform metal to gold. Arthur caught Tom in the process. Although a trial is due, Uther admits that Tom's death sentence has already been signed. With a key given to him by Morgana, Tom managed to escape briefly - but the knights caught up with him, and killed him on the spot, leaving Gwen fatherless.

He finds Lancelot's seal of nobility as a forgery, even though it is of the highest standard, it is still a forgery. He appears again in "Excalibur" and confirms that the Black Knight is "Tristan Du Bois", Ygraine's brother, who was killed by Uther after he threw down his gauntlet to the king. He also informs Merlin that the only way to kill a wraith is by using a magical sword, which is forged in the breath of a dragon.

Uther-- Banished from Camelot by Uther due to Igraine's death. She despises Uther for exiling her from her home and persecuting her kind. Gaius-- He once practiced magic alongside Nimueh. Though she has no designs on him in particular, she is displeased by what side he is on. Merlin--Rival of Merlin due to the fact that he is in total opposition of her. He uses his magic in order to protect Camelot while she uses it to try and destroy it. Almost killed Merlin in The Poisoned Chalice. In Le Morte d'Arthur Merlin asks Nimueh to save Arthur and to take his life in place. Merlin's mother gets chosen instead to replace Arthur's death so Gaius summons Nimueh and offers his life to restore the balance. Merlin defeats Nimueh however and supposedly her life takes the place of Arthur's death. Though she appears to have died, her ultimate fate is uncertain. Arthur--No significant enmity towards Arthur. In The Poisoned Chalice she leads him into danger but does not kill him, saying his fate lies in someone else's hands. Her purpose is not to harm him, but to keep him from saving Merlin's life.

She suggests that it may have been her destiny to do so. Merlin - Mordred recognizes Merlin's magic immediately, and calls him "Emrys", implying that he may know more about Merlin's power than even Merlin does (Emrys Welsh. His full name is Myrddin Emrys). Merlin is warned by the Great Dragon in The Beginning of the End that if Mordred lives, he will kill Arthur, but he eventually decides to help save his life, despite the risks. Arthur - Arthur helps save Mordred from execution in The Beginning of the End, and both are seemingly ignorant of Mordred's destiny to one day kill Arthur.
