| CHARACTER & PLOT CONNECTIONS: Lancelot returns in "Lancelot and Guinevere", appearing as a broken spirit, his optimism from his first appearance having been worn away by the harsh realities of the world. A soldier for hire, he is first seen accepting a challenge from the warlord, Hengist. He fights a bandit in a barred cage for the amusement of those watching.
When he sees Gwen being held captive by these men, his love for her reinspires him, and he vows to help her escape. He launches a daring rescue attempt, but neither of them manage to escape.
Just before the pair are devoured by a vicious beast, Arthur and Merlin arrive, and all four escape the castle.
When Lancelot realizes that Gwen and Arthur have feelings for each other, he decides to depart so as not to come between them.

| CHARACTER & PLOT CONNECTIONS: Geoffrey appears in Season 2, to carry out the wedding between Uther Pendragon and Lady Catrina of Tregor, who is actually a troll in disguise. He returns in the next episode, when he crowns Lady Catrina as Queen of Camelot. He is rudely interrupted several times, as the troll is desperate to leave room, because her potion (Which Merlin has changed) is'nt working.
His latest appearance was in "Sins of the Father" where he informs the King and Arthur that there are no rules against a women issuing a challenge, just as Morgause did to Arthur.

| CHARACTER & PLOT CONNECTIONS: Morgause first appears in "The Sins of the Father", challenging Arthur to a fight, to the death. She then defeats Arthur and is willing to spare his life, on the condition that he will accept any challenge she gives to him. Arthur accepts.
Morgause then grants Arthur one wish, after testing his courage, by having him place his head on an execution block. Arthur, above anything else, wishes to see his mother.
Morgause brings back Ygraine's spirit, for a short while, although it is still uncertain whether is was actually her or just an illusion conjured by Morgause. It appears that her main aim was to cause a rift between Arthur and Uther, which would destroy the kingdom.
Morgause, it is revealed, is also the half-sister of Morgana through their father, Gorlois. Morgana feels a connection to Morgause, though she does not know why. In The Fires of Idirsholas, Morgause recruits Morgana in an attempt on Uther's life, using her to put the city to sleep and binding her life to that of seven undead warriors, the Knights of Medhir. When Merlin reluctantly poisons Morgana, Morgause feels her pain and calls off the attack in order to save her life. The pair disappear from Camelot together, and have not been seen since.

| | BEST QUOTE: -- | CHARACTER & PLOT CONNECTIONS: Balinor is the last surviving Dragonlord, long thought dead by Uther. When the Great Dragon begins attacking Camelot, Gaius reveals that he is rumored to still be alive, and living in a neighboring kingdom. In truth, Gaius had assisted in Balinor's escape many years before, and helped him get beyond the borders of Camelot and to the village of Ealdor. There, he fell in love with a woman named Hunith, Merlin's mother.
Shortly after, Uther's men came in pursuit of Balinor, and he was forced to flee again, leaving behind the woman he loved, and the child he didn't know she carried. He then spent almost two decades living in a cave in the wilderness.
Merlin and Arthur go in search of Balinor, but not before Gaius reveals to Merlin that the man they are looking for is his father. When they find him, Merlin is disappointed to discover a bitter and selfish man, who is willing to let Camelot fall in order to have revenge on Uther. Eventually, though, Merlin manages to convince him not to punish an entire nation for the actions of one man, and Balinor agrees to accompany them back to Camelot.
Not long afterward, Balinor is killed while protecting Merlin during an ambush in the forest. When he dies, he passes on his Dragonlord abilities to his son.

| CHARACTER & PLOT CONNECTIONS: The deceased wife of Uther and mother of Arthur, she died as a result of Uther's employing magic to bring about Arthur's birth. A life had to be given as payment for a life being created, though Uther claims not to have known this and Nimueh, who performed the magic, claims not to have known that Ygraine is the one who would have to die.
During the episode "Sins of the Father", Morgause invokes the spirit of Ygraine, who reveals the truth of Arthur's birth to him. Whether this was truly Ygraine's ghost or a false projection created to destroy the relationship between Arthur and Uther is not known for certain.

| CHARACTER & PLOT CONNECTIONS: A brave and loyal knight of Camelot, Sir Leon has served as a strong support character for Arthur and Uther throughout season 2. He first appears in The Once and Future Queen, jousting against Arthur and purposely throwing the match so as not to injure the heir to the throne. He later assists Gaius in his attempts to convince Uther that his wife is a troll during Beauty and the Beast II, and is present when Arthur arrives to confront Uther in Sins of the Father.
During the season 2 finale, The Last Dragonlord, Sir Leon is the first to volunteer to face the Great Dragon alongside Arthur. He is injured during the attack, but manages to survive. | |

| CHARACTER & PLOT CONNECTIONS: A beautiful druid girl with a dangerous secret. Freya was once forced to kill the son of a sorcerer after he attacked her, and when his mother found out she cursed Freya. Every midnight, she girl would transform into a creature called a Bastet, and would be overcome with an insatiable desire to kill.
When Merlin discovers Freya, imprisoned by a bounty hunter named Halig, he believes she has magic like him and rescues her. While hiding out in the tunnels under Camelot, the pair begin to develop feelings to each other - to the point where Merlin decides to abandon Arthur and his destiny to run away with her.
Unfortunately, fate has other plans for Freya. She transforms into the Bastet and begins murdering citizens of Camelot, leading Arthur and his knights to confront her. During their battle, Arthur strikes a mortal wound against the "beast," leaving Freya to flee and, after regaining human form, die in Merlin's arms.
He buries her by sinking her body into the beautiful lake that she loved, but she may return one day to repay the debt she owes Merlin, for freeing her from her own self-hatred.

Morgana - Mordred and Morgana share a bond that Morgana cannot explain, but she feels compelled to help and protect him. He is there in the Druid camp when she visits it to learn more about her powers, and later she helps him steal a mystic stone that he can use to destroy Uther.
Merlin - Merlin is suspicious of Mordred because of the Dragon's prophecy that Mordred will one day bring about Arthur's doom. Though he helps Mordred (and the rest of the Druids) escape Arthur's men in "The Nightmare Begins", Mordred's callous murder of the guards and his involvement in a plan to destroy Uther in "The Witch's Quickening" eventually forces Merlin to act against him. He attempts to get Mordred caught by the knights, and Mordred declares himself Merlin's enemy.
Alvarr - Mordred's friend and unofficial guardian. He seems to understand the strength of Mordred's powers very well and in "The Witch's Quickening" planned to use him to destroy Uther. At the episode's end, they were separated.
