Merlin tries to stop Arthur from eloping with Sophia, and tells him that he is his friend, looking very hurt when Arthur tells him he is just a servant Merlin saves Arthur's life by diving into the lake and pulling him from the water and just holding him in his arms in the water Merlin lies for Arthur so he won't get found out about eloping with Sophia, and gets put in the stocks as a result |
| 1.08 "The Beginning of the End" | Arthur tells Merlin to meet him so they can help the druid boy, Mordred, escape. Merlin agrees after Arthur's request After helping Arthur save Mordred, Arthur tells Merlin to disappear so he won't be caught, which shows that Arthur really cares about Merlin's safety |
| 1.09 "Excalibur" | Merlin tries to talk Arthur out of fighting the black knight, of fear that he will be killed. He goes to the dragon especially to ask for a weapon that will kill the dead. | 1.10 "The Moment of Truth" | Merlin and Arthur share a sweet moment on the castle roof, in which Merlin tells Arthur that he mist leave him to help his mother. Arthur seems quite upset that Merlin will not be returning and hides his disappointment by making a joke about Merlin being a terrible manservant. When Merlin is travelling to Ealdor, he meets Arthur in the forest, and runs after him like a little puppy, so happy to see him. When Merlin thanks Arthur for coming to help, Arthur changes the subject, telling him to sleep Merlin and Arthur sleep next to each other on the floor and Arthur talks to Merlin about his past and why he left Ealdor. Merlin tries to avoid it and Arthur teases him by sticking his foot in Merlin's face. Merlin says that he didn't fit in in his village, and wanted to find somewhere that he did. Hunith comments on the fact that Arthur cares for Merlin a great deal and that he came to Ealdor for him and that he likes him. Merlin denies this. Morgana and Gwen talk about why Arthur came to Ealdor, come to the conclusion that he came for Merlin. Whilst preparing for battle, Arthur tells Merlin to put his own armour on instead of Arthur's, but when he sees that Merlin is having trouble with his armour, Arthur helps him. He tells Merlin that it's OK to be scared and that's 'it's' been an honour. It looks as if Merlin will tell Arthur about his magic in this scene, but he doesn't. |
| 1.11 "The Labyrinth of Gedref" | Arthur begins to listen to Merlin's advise a lot more in this episode, following the curse that Arthur brings upon Camelot. Merlin telld Arthur to accept that it is his fault, and towards the end of the episode, Arthur begins to value his advice Arthur drinks, what he believes, to be poison for Merlin to avoid him dying. It is the only way to save his Kingdom- one of them had to drink a sleeping potion that was thought to be poison, and Arthur drank it, willing to sacrifise himself for Merlin. Merlin soon begs to be able to take Arthur's place, before realising that he isn't dead at all. |
