This year's BBC One charity television event "Children in Need" airs on November 20th at 7PM. Anthony Head will be stepping up as the host, although according to technofinger.com Anthony stated that due to his fear of live TV his first thought was to turn down the offer:

“When I was first approached to appear on "Children in Need" my first instinct was to say no as the thought of live television terrifies me.”But how could I not take part when countless people across the United Kingdom are raising money doing extraordinary things for such a worthwhile cause?

Beauty and the Beast Recap by Lady_Valerie

10/26/09

Merlin's back! If you missed the exciting start of Beauty and the Beast make sure to check out the excellent episode recap. Check out an excerpt of the recap by Lady_Valerie:

In a dark cave, a sorcerer in ragged robes casts a spell over a cauldron. Another figure in rags is huddled on the ground nearby. The sorcerer completes the potion and pours it into a vial which he takes to the figure.

A figure emerges from the ragged bundle. It is a horrible female troll with a wart hog's face and body. She takes the potion from the sorcerer. The troll, whom the sorcerer addresses as "Mistress", describes how the potion will help her in her quest to win the riches of Camelot and drinks it down. The troll screams in pain and falls forward. When the sorcerer takes the vial from the troll, we see the long elegant fingers and hand of a human woman.

Merlin (1998)

10/22/09

Before there was Colin Morgan and Bradley James there was Sam Neill and Paul Curran! This three episode miniseries aired in 1998 and once again tells the Arthurian legend through the eyes of Merlin. The film spans from before Merlin's birth to after the fall of Camelot.

Lena Headly of The Sarah Connor Chronicles fame, played Guinevere and Helen Bonham Carter channels a bit of Bellatrix Lestrange in her portrayal of the evil Morgan La Fey.

Sarah Parish: Reverse Makeover for "Beauty and the Beast"

10/18/09

Sarah Parish of Mistresses fame, underwent a monstrous transformation to go from "beauty" to "beast" for the upcoming two-part episode "Beauty and the Beast"

In the Daily Mail, Sarah Parish states:

It was very uncomfortable, very heavy. I don't suggest anybody who gets claustrophobic to do prosthetic work because you do feel constantly slightly suffocated.

But Sarah Parish isn't new when it comes to wearing full prosthetics, who can forget the spider queen from Doctor Who's "Runaway Bride"?
Not sure which is scarier!

Why it's important that Gwen is a woman of color

10/12/09

glass_icarus has written a very eloquent and relevant post about the importance of Gwen being a woman of color.

Gwen as a black girl is a HUGE DEAL for fantasy fans, much in the way that Nyota Uhura is a HUGE DEAL for sci-fi fans. Not only did the BBC choose to set up their show so that a black girl is a major player within Arthurian legend, they set her up to be Guinevere, Queen of Camelot, one of the most central female figures in Arthuriana as we know it today. This black girl isn't just going to get the guy- she's going to get Arthur Pendragon, the most iconic figure in European legend; she's going to get the Once and Future King. Not only that- if the BBC follows through with the love triangle, she's also going to get Lancelot du Lac, the paragon of European knighthood.

Camelot: A City of Glory or Over-Romanticism?

10/05/09

The Camelot Chronicle - Merlin TV Show

Camelot, the city from which the kings of Britain ruled both fairly and justly, has always been painted as beautiful, prosperous, welcoming, and fair. When one thinks of Camelot, the first images in connection are of both King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. Both led Camelot through a golden age- but was this a true golden age, or merely a picture presented by romantic authors?

The literature that Camelot appears in was all written during English Romanticism. During this era, works showed the glories of man, their creations, and everything else in a heavenly light. It is logical to draw the conclusion that Camelot's ideal description was simply some authors creating their own version of utopia while giving it a place in history. But how might we come to this conclusion? Let's look at the literature that Camelot has appeared in.

A French poet by the name of Chretien de Troyes was the first author to describe Camelot, and he did so in his tale of Lancelot. However, Camelot was never truly discussed in his poem; it was merely mentioned in passing and its status was never established. In later works by different authors, Camelot was again mentioned- but this time, it was made the capital of Britain and its splendor was completely detailed. These works of literature are what give us the common conception of Camelot- that being grand and powerful.

It seems that this change in Camelot's appearance is directly linked to romanticism, which drove the literature during this era. Authors wanted to show the goodness of humanity, and how better to do so then by showing the human race at its might? In Camelot, the people were both fair in their laws and punishment and strong in battle. Furthermore, Camelot had a booming economy. The rulers were good and true, unlike the modern day monarchs and politicians.

And finally, there is evidence for the over-romanticism of Camelot in its lack of documented history. To this day, the location of Camelot is unknown. There are currently thirteen castles that all have good cases for being the true Camelot. But without any documentation from the Arthurian time period, we will never know what Camelot was really like.

BREAKING NEWS! Rob Owen of The Pittsburgh Post says "No Season 2 for Merlin!"

10/02/09

Not sure if this is definitive news or not. In Rob Owen's "TV Q&A with Rob Owen" he states:

Q: Will NBC's TV series "Merlin" becoming back for a second season? If so, when will it begin? -- Regis, 50, Pittsburgh

Rob: No, it was a bomb on NBC. I suppose if the Brits continue with the series it might end up on BBC America but I haven't heard anything to that effect.

Now, we're not sure where he's getting his information. He doesn't quote an NBC source, so I'm not taking this as the final word. But it's all the more reason to join up and be a part of the Merlin Twitter Saturday.
We need to work some magic of our own to get Merlin back to the States and around the globe.

Don't forget to Tweet on Saturday!

Is Merlin getting sexier this season?

10/01/09

Prince Arthur seems to be getting a bit more "shirtless time" this season. I don't think I'm the only one to notice this.

Even Dave Hill of the Guardian had something to say about the amount of Arthur's chest time during "The Curse of Cornelius Sigan".

Dave Hill writes: "Last week's episode addressed the issue of obsessive-compulsive disorder as it afflicts the young Prince Arthur (who, according to legend, has quite a future ahead of him). For all his apparent confidence, it seems the heir to Camelot is quite unable to hang up a set of keys without first baring his torso."

The Camelot Chronicle - Merlin TV Show

The Camelot Chronicle - Merlin TV Show

"Time and again the camera homed in on the young warrior's magnificent pectorals as he reached up to hang the key ring on its hook. So subtle was this depiction of the character's affliction, you might almost have thought the lingering upon his resplendent physique was in some way gratuitous. I beg to differ. And I'm quite sure my view is shared by the female relatives – one each in their mid-teens, mid-twenties and mid-forties – with whom I was watching. They were very moved. Why else would they all have sighed in such a conspicuous way?"

Dave Hill does have a point, the above screen caps were taken at three different points in the episode! Perhaps the writers wanted to start off season 2 with a bang!

So what do you think? Is Merlin catering directly towards its female audience?
