I wholeheartedly agree that the dragon is selfish and manipulative, but I don't think he deserves a bad rep. Heck, if I was locked up in a jail for being what I am, I'd try to find my way out. I think, the dragon knows Merlin has power beyond his; his weakness--Merlin's--is lack of knowledge, experience, and the restraints which Uther has on Magic. I find that Merlin's restraints in fact will make him an even more powerful and tactful wizard. The dragon although great and wise has experienced failure in underestimating Merlin's character; his unflinching loyalty towards Arthur and the greater good, his abilities to rationalize situations with his logic and instinct as opposed to depending on his magic. He isn't a power driven wizard seeking to take over the world like Brain the mouse and the Dragon now knows that Merlin's character has much more power to behold. He did persuade Merlin to give him his freedom, but why not something else? Why did he not ask Merlin to kill Uther ? Perhaps he plans on seeking his own revenge but it is unlike the Dragon's character to do this type of thing himself. He knows he would be perscuted endlessly. I would not think him evil for seeking justice from a king that has caged him for being a magical omen. I vote that the dragon not be considered selfish and manipulative in the evil sense but rather an opportunist seeking his freedom. Again his wish is to get rid of Uther in order to be free, his knowledge and insight tells him that Arthur has a great destiny. He does nothing to try and change these things. His instigation is simply a means to gain his freedom.

I Believe the great dragon is what we call a Bronze dragon. They are characterized by a sense of justice, and a reverance for order, they have webbed feet. - According to what i have read
