The Last Dragonlord Recap

As the Great Dragon is freed by Merlin, he wastes no time in seeking revenge upon Camelot. People are screaming, running, and fires surround them all. Camelot is in disarray. 
Arthur and his knights, along with Merlin, are prepared to defend the city, on the battlements. They then hear a distant, unearthly noise, which turns out to be the Dragon, who is flying straight towards the castle’s battlements. Camelot has been badly damaged by the Dragon’s merciless attacks, and even the knights appear to be fearful of it. They have their crossbows ready, and Arthur orders them to flame up. They hastily flame their arrows, and prepare to fire. Arthur gives his knights a few words of inspiration. The Dragon then begins to descend to the battlements, and the knights become a little shaky. Arthur orders them to “Hold firm” Four times before giving the order. However, their flamed arrows inflict no damage at all, and the Dragon replies with a ferocious breath of flame and the knights are forced to take cover as fire streaks through the battlement slits. 
Gwen then informs Gaius that they have no clean water left, but Gaius warns her that it is too dangerous to go to the well, which is in the main courtyard. Gwen ignores him, knowing that they are in desperate need for water, and leaves the safe confinement of the castle. Amongst the fire, screams, and running people, Gwen reaches the well, and begins to collect water. Arthur then appears from the smoke, again, ordering people to leave the square. He then notices Gwen, and warns her to go inside. She ignores him, but then the Dragon begins to dive down towards her. Arthur warns her for the second time, this time calling her by her full name. Gwen notices the Dragon, and begins to run to the castle. Arthur catches up with her, just in time to save her from the dragon’s vicious claws, but not quite fast enough to stop himself from suffering. Arthur then guides Gwen to the safety of the castle. 
Merlin appears, and attempts to attack the Dragon with an enchanted spear, but this merely bounces off the tough, magically protected skin of the Dragon. The Dragon then taunts Merlin, claiming that his “petty magic” cannot harm him. He then flies back to the city, while Merlin shouts back to him, asking why he is killing innocent people. He receives no answer. 
Gwen tends to Arthur’s wounds, telling him that he should not have risked his life. Arthur claims that he was not going to let anything happen to her, and Gwen simply smiles. They hold hands as Gwen presses Arthur’s wound with a wet towel. Gaius notices their intimacy and merely smiles. Merlin then approaches him, and tells Gaius that his magic is no good against the Dragon. Gaius then lets out the truth that the Dragon is immune to his magic is no good. Merlin can’t believe it; he doesn’t want to... 
Day arrives for Camelot; the castle charred and burning in places. Arthur is telling Uther of how many casualties there has been, and how damaged the castle is, with the western wall near to collapse. Uther is uneasy, he wants to know more. “How did the beast escape?” Sir Leon replies “I regret to say, sire, we don’t.” Merlin looks on with guilt, as Uther becomes desperate, and asks Gaius for a solution. Gaius simply replies “We need a Dragonlord, sire.” Uther believes that all of the Dragonlords are alive, but Gaius insists that there is still one alive. His name is Balinor. Arthur points out that it is their duty to find the Dragonlord, as there is no other option. Uther orders him to stay, but Arthur eventually persuades him, and orders Merlin to prepare the horses. 
Back in Gaius’ quarters Merlin prepares to leave, while asking Gaius who the Dragonlords were. After Gaius tells him as much as he wants to, Merlin then asks how Gaius knew that there was one still alive. Gaius admits that he helped this person escape. He then takes the opportunity to turn around the questions, now asking Merlin if he has ever heard the name “Balinor”, or had his mother ever mentioned the name. Merlin is confused, but Gaius then tells him that she had taken Balinor in, while Uther was hunting down the Dragonlords. Gaius then finally admits that the man Merlin and Arthur will be looking for, Balinor, is Merlin’s father. Merlin is shocked, and claims he had a right to know, upset and frustrated that both Gaius and his own mother had never told him. 
Merlin and Arthur then mount horses, and leave Camelot at the mercy of The Great Dragon, while searching for the only man who can save the great city; Balinor... Merlin’s father. They leave Camelot with haste, at full gallop until they finally reach the border between Camelot and Cenred’s kingdom. As they arrive in the bordering village, they arrive at an inn, and everyone inside falls completely silent, and simply stare at the soaked Arthur and Merlin. Arthur tries to be friendly, but none return the compliment. Arthur then asks the innkeeper if he knows where to find Balinor. He also offers him gold. The innkeeper claims that he has never heard of such a man, and refuses the gold. Arthur then tells Merlin that he hopes none of the men at the inn is Balinor. Merlin completely and utterly agrees... 
In the room they rent for the night, Arthur asks Merlin what is wrong with him, also admitting that he enjoys his manservant’s surly retorts. Arthur also points out that as a prince, they cannot be friends, but telling Merlin that if he wasn’t a prince, they would probably get on. As Merlin keeps trying to avoid a question, Arthur throws a pillow at him teasingly, demanding an answer. When he finally tells the prince that he is worried about everyone back in Camelot, Arthur says that he is too. 
Back in Camelot, Sir Leon commands a small group of knights, as the Dragon prepares to attack again. Again, flamed arrows are useless, and the Dragon lands in the courtyard, attempting to burn the knights. In response, they form a tight shield formation to protect them from the deadly flames. They barely hold out. Uther is in his luxurious chambers, unable to do anything but watch the as Dragon slowly but surely destroys Camelot... 
Back in Merlin and Arthur’s rented room, a man seen earlier in the inn attempts to steal Arthur’s food pack, but is stopped when Arthur wakes up, grabbing the thief’s wrist. Arthur demands to know why he tried to steal, and the man names Asgerd says that he was only trying to support his family. Without any further ado, and a sword to the neck, Arthur demands to be told where Balinor is. Asgerd tells him that Balinor now dwells in a cave, a fitting place for him as he hates everything and everyone. He then runs out of the room, leaving Merlin bewildered. 
As Merlin and Arthur travel to the cave the next day, Arthur begins to feel unwell. As Merlin examines Arthur’s wounds, He has to hide as Cenred’s men patrol the forest. As Merlin checks that the coast is clear, he tells Arthur that it is safe, only to find that Arthur is unconscious. Merlin then has no choice but to tie Arthur to his horse and then travels to Balinor’s cave, while leaving Arthur nearby. Merlin enters the cave alone, and is grabbed from behind. After explaining that Arthur needs help, he is released, and turns around to meet this person... Balinor. 
Balinor then tends to ill and unconscious Arthur in the cave, and then he and Merlin eat together. Balinor quickly asks Merlin why he is here, and the young warlock tells him that they are looking for someone named Balinor, as Merlin is not fully sure whether he has found his father. He wants to be sure. Balinor feels threatened, and asks Merlin who he is, an Arthur. Merlin lies at first, saying he is a knight called Lancelot, but Balinor must already know who he is. He also says that Arthur must be asking for trouble, by entering Cenred’s kingdom. Again, 
Merlin asks if he is Balinor, but again, receives no answer. He also tells him that The Great Dragon is attacking Camelot, and Balinor corrects him, calling him Kilgharrah. Merlin insists that no one can stop the Dragon; only a Dragonlord can do that. Balinor feels that Kilgharrah’s attack on Camelot is just, and it for revenge. It is all Uther’s fault. He tells Merlin that Uther hunted him down like an animal, and that the King asked him to bring The Great Dragon to Camelot. Merlin asked where Balinor went, after escaping Uther’s wrath against magic. He says he went to Balinor, he had a life there, a woman... and Uther sent knights to kill him, even though he was not in the Kingdom of Camelot. Merlin tries to persuade Balinor, but he can’t. The Dragonlord understands how Kilgharrah feels, having lost all of his kind, and all of his kin. He asks Balinor if one the people of Camelot was his son, but he claims he has none. As Merlin is on the verge of revealing that he has, Arthur awakes, calling for the warlock... 
The next day, outside the cave, Merlin gazes at his long lost father sadly, after having found him after all these years. Arthur emerges from the cave, loudly asking what he had been treated with, because he felt great. Merlin tells him that Balinor is thanks to that. Merlin then tells him that he cannot be persuaded. Arthur is shocked , especially as the Dragonlord knows what is at stake. He asks Merlin what kind of a man he is, and Merlin says he doesn’t know; he was hoping for something more. He is disappointed with his father... 
Back in Camelot, the people are suffering more and more, casualties are rising. On the battlements, Gwen is joined by Gaius as he asks her if she is missing Morgana. He reassures by saying that Morgana is stronger than people think, and that wherever she is, she will be al; right. Gwen, however, is more interested in Arthur. Gaius is aware of the two of them, and he tells her that he thinks he feels the same way for her. Gwen knows that it can never be, but Gaius tells her to never underestimate the power of love, and that he has seen it changer many things. Gwen just smiles, and gazes out over to the horizon, awaiting Arthur’s return... 
Merlin and Arthur ride at full gallop, resting for a while in the forest. As they settle down, Arthur tells Merlin that he is a riddle, and has got to quite like him, while poking a stick in Merlin’s back. As Merlin gives out a number of things he finds Arthur, such as arrogant, patronising, and condescending, they hear the sound of snapping branches. As they grab their swords, they discover that Balinor has followed them, and has agreed to travel to Camelot with them. Arthur is pleased, and declares that they should eat... 
Merlin and Balinor are fetching wood, and the warlock complains that the wood is too wet. The Dragonlord points out that there sure to find a way to make it light. Merlin begins to ask more about the Dragonlords, and learns that it is a title that is passed down from father to son, suddenly realising that he must be a Dragonlord. He then asks Balinor of Ealdor, and eventually tells him that Hunith is his mother, and that he is his son. Balinor is amazed, and Merlin has tears in his eyes, overjoyed that he has finally found the father he had never known. 
Over the crackling fire, Merlin and Balinor discuss the past, as Arthur sleeps. Merlin wants to know why he left, and Balinor had left his mother because if he had been caught with her, Hunith would have been killed as well as him. Merlin tells Balinor excitedly that he will take him to Ealdor, after they have been to Camelot. Balinor claims that Hunith will no longer recognise him, but that he sees her... in Merlin. That he has her kindness. Merlin then asks Balinor how he became a Dragonlord. Balinor tells him that you do not become a Dragonlord; it is not something you choose. It is a sacred gift, and for thousands of ears, it has been handed down from father to son. Balinor reassures Merlin, telling him that he will not know of the power of the Dragonlord he has within him, until he faces his first dragon. Merlin, remembering that his magic was useless against Kilgharrah, feels unsure... As they go to sleep, Merlin has an experience he has never had before... 
As Merlin wakes up the next day, he notices a wooden carving of a dragon next to him. He gets a nasty shock when Arthur grabs him around the mouth, and warns him to be quiet, as some of Cenred’s men are nearby. They are soon attacked by these men, and Merlin bravely picks up a swprd and begins to fight alongside Balinor. As Merlin is disarmed, and is about to be stabbed, Balinor steps in the way, taking the blow for him. In a moment of sheer fury, Merlin sends the man that stabbed Balinor flying into a tree. 
Merlin slowly helps his father to the ground, and Balinor begins giving him instructions on how to defeat a Dragon. Knowing that he is going to die, knowing that Merlin will take his place. He then tells Merlin that he is proud of him, and then he dies in his son’s arms. Merlin begins to weep, unable to accept that the father he has just found... has just died. Arthur is furious at Balinor’s death, claiming that Camelot is doomed. 
Arthur and Merlin returned to the battle scarred Camelot, and Arthur informs Uther that he has failed him, and that the Last Dragonlord is dead. As Arthur says this, Gaius looks to Merlin, who can barely contain his grief. Arthur refuses to admit defeat, and suggest fighting the Dragon on open ground, on horseback, with better manoeuvrability. Uther says there is no point, but Arthur refuses to give in, pointing out that all they can do is watch Camelot fall, or fight. Uther then tells his son that he has their blessing. Arthur then addresses his knights, and tells them that the chances of returning are slim, and they need not come. However none join him. After a short while, Sir Leon stands in front of Arthur, nodding. Soon, one by one, every single knight in the room surrounds Arthur, forming a circle. Forming the symbolism of the round table for the very first time... 
As Merlin rests in his room, Gaius comes in and asks what happened. Merlin merely replies that he could not save him. He then tells Gaius that Balinor told him that the gifts of the Dragonlord are passed from father to son. Gaius agrees, but Merlin says that his magic was useless when he faced the Great Dragon. In Arthur’s chambers, Merlin prepares the prince for battle, Arthur jokily telling Merlin to look on the bright side, as it will be the last time he will have to clean his armour. Then he admits that he saw Merlin weeping over the Dragonlord’s death, and tells Merlin that he always tells his young knights that “no man is worth your tears”. Arthur looks confused as Merlin picks up a sword 
Merlin then gladly admits how many times he has had save Arthur’s “royal backside”. Arthur is glad that Merlin has his sense of humour back. They both walk to the door, and Arthur asks Merlin again “Are you really going to face this dragon with me?” “I’m not going to sit here and watch.” Merlin breaks the moment when he admits he cares about Arthur’s armour a lot... Arthur, Merlin, and the Knights of Camelot leave the city during the day, as Gaius watches Merlin leave, knowing what the young warlock must do. 
The night arrives, the moon is full, and the knights of Camelot silently prepare themselves for certain death. As the dragon descends on the knights, Arthur constantly orders them to “Hold”, before they break up in tweo groups, which then surround the Dragon when it lands. However, with a single swish of his tail, the dragon unhorses Arthur, Merlin, and half of the knights. As the other half attempt to flank him, the Dragon burns them all. He then turns to face Arthur, who picks up a small wooden spear, which seems rather small in comparison to the creature he faces. The Dragon breaths fire at Arthur, who barely dodges the flames and the force knocks Merlin off his feet. Arthur then stabs the Dragon, who then swipes at the prince, knocking him unconscious. 
As the Dragon begins to limp towards Merlin, he hears the voice of his father inside his mind, reminding him that he is the Last Dragonlord now... Merlin then begins speaking in the language of the Dragon, and Kilgharrah kneels before him, unable to disobey Merlin. He pleads for Merlin not to make him responsible for the death of his kind. Merlin picks up Arthur’s spear, and nearly impales the Dragon, but stops halfway. He gives Kilgharrah one last chance... 
“Go! Leave! If you ever attack Camelot again, I WILL kill you!” Merlin roars, dropping the spear to the floor “I have shown you mercy. Now you must do the same to others.” 
With perfect timing, Arthur wakes up, asking Merlin what had happened. Merlin tells Arthur that he gave the Dragon a mortal blow. Arthur can’t stop laughing with delight. They both walk up to the castle, as it appears all the knights were killed in the fight, including Sir Leon. Uther notices the two of them return, and is more than glad that his son is safe. Gwen embraces Arthur, telling him that she had thought she had lost him. 
Gaius and Merlin hug too, the warlock saying that he had felt Balinor with him when he had faced Kilgharrah. Gaius tells Merlin that he will always be with him. And, knowing that he can never compare with Balinor, Gaius tells Merlin that he still has him. Merlin replies that he supposes that that will have to make do. The two of them laugh; arms linked, and walk back to the castle.
